Shawn Patrick
Prothro
Oct 23, 1964 — Jun 10, 2025
Dallas
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Shawn Patrick Prothro on June 10, 2025. Shawn was born October 23, 1964, in Dallas, Texas to Norman Prothro and Alise Leonard Prothro. He grew up mostly in Carrollton with a brief time spent in Dallas, Houston and Amarillo as a child. Spending time with immediate and extended family was one of the most important things that shaped Shawn's future.
Shawn Prothro graduated from Newman Smith High School in 1983 and went on to earn a college degree from Stephen F Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Upon graduation Shawn joined LEVINES DEPARTMENT STORES, the family business that his dad, Norman, bought in to in the late 70's and where Shawn had spent summers as a teenager working part-time, learning the business from the ground up. Even his brother in law Damon remembers "Shawn my brother I knew you when you were just an eager teenager helping me working for the family business". Shawn worked in and then managed the Mesquite, Texas location before eventually moving to the home office in Pleasant Grove to manage and buy the boy's and girl's apparel.
It was during that time in Mesquite that Shawn joined the Mesquite Metro AMBUCS where he enjoyed a lifelong passion of serving and supporting their mission of "inspiring mobility & independence for mobility impaired adults, children and veterans". For over 33 years, he led and participated in multiple ways – serving as president twice and on many different committees. But his biggest accomplishment was leading their Big Hat Golf Tournament over 10 years with the last 4 years averaging over $100 thousand dollars each year! But he was also into the fun and spent many hours on his famous trivia games!
Shawn was a longtime resident of Garland, Texas. He enjoyed all of the local professional sports teams with a deep passion for the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Stars. He was up for any conversation on any topic and would often correspond with other family members during the Cowboy games – especially his cousin Kelley Whatley in East Texas. But he loved going to all the team's games and invited many friends and family members to join him. He was also a dog lover having spent many years with his dogs Bart and then later Guinness – both of which had much adoration from the neighbors!
Shawn Prothro was preceded in death by his parents Norman and Alise Prothro, sister Pamela Prothro King. Surviving Shawn Prothro are his brother Lance Prothro and his wife Rhonda of Rockwall; brother-in-law Damon King; and nieces/nephews Lauren King Saatkamp, Taylor Prothro, Christina Prothro, Rachelle Roberts and Brad Roberts and numerous cousins and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are encouraged to his favorite charity – Mesquite Metro AMBUCS.
