Mary Jane DeWeese Ungerer, affectionately known as "Janie," was born on October 30, 1941, to Joe and Mary DeWeese. On November 2, 2026, after a lengthy battle with pneumonia and while under Hospice care, she peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Janie's story began in East Dallas, where she met a boy named Orville at J.L. Long Junior High. He would become her husband, best friend, and favorite accomplice for the next 65 years. After dating throughout high school, they eloped soon after her graduation in 1960, returning home married and leaving family and friends thoroughly surprised.
Janie built a successful career in banking, beginning as a teller at Grand Avenue Bank. Her intelligence, determination, and gift for connecting with people earned her respect, promotions, and lifelong friendships. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the State Fair of Texas and bowling in a league with her favorite teammate, Orv.
In 1964, Janie and Orville built their East Dallas home and filled it with family, memories, and enough photographs to qualify as a private museum. A gifted seamstress, Janie could create almost anything she imagined. Whether it was a prairie dress with a bonnet for Cathy, a custom purple Easter suit for Chuck, or some last-minute masterpiece no store could provide, she simply sat down and made it herself.
Janie deeply loved her family and never fully recovered from the loss of her beloved son, Chuck, in 1985. She and Orville happily spoiled their children and later elevated grandparenting to an Olympic-level sport. As Nana, she rarely missed a ball game, recital, cheer competition, or shopping trip. She stood in long lines during the Cabbage Patch craze, never met a grandchild or great grandchild she couldn't spoil, and firmly believed that love was best expressed through hugs, attention, and gifts.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Orville Ungerer, and her beloved son, Charles David "Chuck" Ungerer. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is reunited with them both, catching up on lost time and, no doubt, having a Dr. Pepper, BBQ sandwiches and donuts.
Janie is survived by her daughter, Cathy Patton and husband Greg; grandchildren Holly Packer and husband Collin, Heather Fielder and husband Lance, Morgan Nolan and husband Matt, and Prescott "Scott" Patton and wife Kelly; and seven cherished great-grandchildren: Maddox, Addison, Brooklyn, Cason, Hadley, Knox, and Charlie Jane.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 8, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Garland, with funeral services on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow immediately at Grove Hill Memorial Park.
