Marion Lee Wright was born at home on October 9, 1946, in Cooper, Delta County, Texas. He was the youngest of eleven children born to Lafayette Calvin Wright and Ruby Pearl Maupin. Known affectionately as "Munlee" during his childhood, Marion faced early challenges when his father passed away when he was just five years old. This loss led the family to relocate to Lubbock, TX, where Marion's life was shaped by hardship and a close-knit family. As a young boy, Marion worked alongside his family in the cotton fields, developing a strong work ethic and a deep sense of resilience. He also spent time playing with the farm's Clydesdales, forming a special bond with the majestic horses that stayed with him throughout his life. Marion's determination and strong family values helped him navigate the challenges of growing up. After graduating, Marion enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1966, answering the call to serve his country. That same year, he met Velda Faye Gillit at Bible study, his first love.

During the Vietnam War, Marion displayed extraordinary courage. Despite being wounded in combat, he selflessly rescued his fellow Marines, a testament to his unwavering loyalty and bravery. Marion would often exchange cigarettes for peach cans—a simple act that highlighted his adaptability and love for small comforts amidst hardship. His service earned him numerous honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Marine Rifle Expert Badge, and Marine Pistol Expert Badge. After five years, he was honorably discharged in 1971.

In 1967, Marion married Velda Gillet, a talented baton twirler who captured his heart. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support, raising their three energetic sons in Garland, Texas. Marion's career as a computer mainframe repair expert highlighted his technical brilliance, but his greatest dedication was always to his family and the community he served. He coached multiple youth sports along with the Berkner High School league, instilling values of teamwork and discipline in countless young athletes. From volunteering as a referee and umpire to rebuilding baseball fields, Marion's passion for mentoring left a lasting legacy.

Marion's talents didn't stop at coaching. He was a jack-of-all-trades who could repair anything—and often did, sometimes for the second or third time. A mention of an M-22 Rockcrusher would light up his day. His hobbies included woodworking, leathercraft, and preserving the family's genealogy. Marion poured his heart into creating heirlooms, like bunk beds for his boys and a dining table for Velda.

In 1997, Marion embraced his greatest role: grandpa. His first grandson, Kevin, was followed by three granddaughters, Kayla Bennett and husband James, Maeghan, and Madyson, whom he affectionately called "Baby Doll." His grandchildren brought boundless joy to his life, and he loved spoiling them endlessly.

When Velda passed in 2005, Marion honored her memory by holding family traditions close. In 2012, he found a second chance at love with Sandra Siddell. Together, they traveled, deepened their faith with their church family, and showered affection on their beloved dog, Sophie. Sandra brought joy and companionship into Marion's later years, and he treasured every moment with her.

Marion's legacy of love and devotion continues through his wife, Sandra; his sons, Lee Wright and wife Diana, with their children Kevin, and Kayla Bennett and husband, James; Craig Wright and wife Michelle, with their daughters Maeghan and Madyson; and Jay Wright. Sandra's family also held a special place in Marion's heart: Amy and Ryan Walters, with daughters Katie, Hannah, and Rileigh, and granddaughter Summer; and Jason Siddell and wife Tyra, with sons Payton, Ethan, and Noah.

Marion's life was a testament to resilience, practicality, and deep faith. His devotion to his Christian beliefs guided his actions and enriched the lives of those around him. He lived fully, loved deeply, and left a mark on everyone he met. He will be profoundly missed, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00PM Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Williams Memorial Chapel with a visitation one hour prior. Private family interment will immediately follow funeral.
