June Cavanah Hatley

June Cavanah Hatley left this earth and went home into the arms of Jesus on October
2, 2024.  Born June 7, 1928, the second of six children, to Reverend George and Lavine
Cavanah in Eddyville, Kentucky.
She graduated from High School in Arlington, Kentucky in 1946 and attended Bethel
Women's College, a two-year all girls college, from 1946-1948.  June won the coveted
"Spirit Cup" Award for her class which was given to a student representing the ideals of
the school. She attended Georgetown College in Kentucky from 1948-1950, receiving a
B.S. degree in psychology.  During the summer, she served in Hawaii as a summer
missionary through the Baptist Student Union organization.  While attending
Georgetown, she met her husband, James, and they wed on June 2, 1950.
June and Jim were both in ministry studies after marriage.  June pursued a Master's
degree at the Carver School of Missions and Social Work from 1952-1954 which later
became part of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
June and Jim served on the mission field in San Andres Island, Columbia before serving
at several churches in Texas, California and Tennessee.  Dr. Hatley served as Pastor of
First Baptist Church, Bonham, TX, Riverside Baptist Church, Fort Worth, TX and First
Baptist, Beverly Hills Church, CA.  In 1965, they moved to Nashville, TN where Jim
worked as the Supervisor of the Adult Section of the Church Training Department of
Sunday School Board (now Lifeway).  They moved to Memphis, TN in 1970 where he
served as Pastor of Second Baptist Church for 17 years before retiring and moving to
Orlando, FL to work part-time with South American Missions followed by their return and
full-time retirement in Memphis two years later.

Having surrendered her life to full-time Christian service at 16 and as the daughter of a
Baptist preacher, June considered the role of a minister's wife an honor and a privilege
and she loved people well.  She served as the volunteer Preschool Director for Second
Baptist Church and originated a Mother's Day Out program there. June wrote curriculum
and articles for several Baptist denominational publications and taught seminars on the
development of preschoolers.  She was called "Junie" by children at Second Baptist and
later, it was picked up by her younger grandchildren.

Jim and June raised four children:
Antonio "Tony" Brooks Hatley, James Michael Hatley, Cavan Monroe Hatley, and Kelly
June Hatley McBrayer.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, her sons Antonio "Tony"
and Cavan, her sisters Sarah Clayton and Shirley Pace.  She is survived by Mary
Hatley (Tony-deceased), Michael Hatley (Susie) and Kelly McBrayer (Mike).  She is also
survived by Grandchildren: Dan Hatley, Dana Beavers (Donny), Katy Clifton (Scott),
Annie Harral (Jeffrey), Reed Hatley (Whitney), Drew McBrayer (Alli), Matt McBrayer,
Amanda McBrayer and 11 great grandchildren: Amber Baley (Max), Shaye Hatley,
Bryson Beavers, Brennan Beavers, William Clifton, Annie Clifton, Jonah Clifton, Claire
Harral, Ruby Harral, Aubrey McBrayer and Caleb McBrayer.  She is also survived by
sister Rebecca Clark, brothers Gerry Cavanah and George Cavanah and numerous
nieces and nephews.

Her husband of 45 years, James W. Hatley, died in 1995.  June has lived in the
Richardson, Texas area since 1996 where she was an active member of First Baptist
Church, Richardson for as long as she was able.  Adults on Mission leadership, Sunday
School Class Director, assisting in the ESL International Student Ministry, foreign
mission trips and teaching two-year olds were just some of her activities there.  She
also served on the Mainland Advisory Committee of Hawaii Baptist Academy in
Honolulu, Hawaii.
From mid-life until she was 90, June made sourdough bread and shared it with friends,
family and those who were ill or in nursing homes.  This came to be affectionally known
as "Junie Bread" as named by the grandchildren.   She will be remembered for her gift
of hospitality as she frequently welcomed guests into her home, many times with a
moment's notice.

A celebration of life will be held at FBC Richardson, Friday, October 18th at 11:00AM.

Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, TN, Tuesday October 29, 2024 at 3:00PM.
