Johnny Wayne Amburgey

Born January 7, 1935 - Passed Away January 28, 2026

It is with heaviness of heart that we announce the passing of John Amburgey on January 28, 2026. Johnny Wayne Amburgey was born to Charles and Pearl Amburgey in Lawton, Oklahoma on January 7, 1935. Johnny was the only child of the Amburgey's.

John was known for his faithfulness in all aspects of his life; his love of the Lord, his faithfulness to his wife Sandra Amburgey, whom he had been married to for 69 years, his love of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

John, who was attending the University of Oklahoma in Norman, met Sandra through a friend while in their hometown of Lawton. They were married on September 2, 1956.

John obtained a business degree at OU and went through Army ROTC and was in the US Army for 2 years after graduating from OU. John and Sandra moved to Fort Bragg, NC, in 1958.

John elected to leave the Military after 2 years, deciding instead to enter into a career in business. He was subsequently offered a job he accepted in Dallas with State Farm Insurance Companies in late 1959.  John worked for just under 45 years with a long successful career in auto claims. The majority of which was as an auto Claim Superintendent/Claim Team Manager.

During that lengthy career, John met and nourished relationships with people at State Farm and was a role model encouraging them both professionally and in their personal lives for success away from the job.

John retired on October 1, 2004, just prior to turning seventy.

Family: One year after getting married, daughter, Melody Amburgey Kirk (son in law, David Kirk) was born to John and Sandra. After moving to Dallas to begin his career with State Farm, son Rick Amburgey (daughter in law, Sherry Amburgey) was born in 1961. John and Sandra's third child, Marc Amburgey, was born in 1966.

John and Sandra had 6 grandchildren: Colin Kirk of McKinney; Natalie Kirk Lewis of Prosper, husband Tyler Lewis; Jordan Amburgey of Wichita Falls, wife Lauren; Tyler Amburgey late of Lavon, widow, Aimee; Ashleigh Huntsinger, of Royce City, husband Ian Huntsinger and Caroline Miller of San Antonio, husband Mack Miller.

John and Sandra now have six great grandchildren: Rylee Amburgey of Lake Ozarks, Missouri; Thatcher Lewis, Claire Lewis, and Turner Lewis of Prosper; Aiden Amburgey and Charlotte Amburgey of Wichita Falls.

John was so extraordinarily excited prior to his passing knowing that more great grandchildren were "on the way" Lord willing.

John cherished relationships with cousins and relatives. Most of whom have proceeded him in death. Sharon Burgamy continues to support the family. The Dismuke family in Lawton, and the Temples of Florida, also provide encouragement and a long treasure of memories.

A tremendous part of John and Sandra's lives centered on their faith. They placed membership at 8th and Austin Street church of Christ after moving to Garland in late 1959.

While members at Austin Street, John and Sandra attended several home bible study groups. John also served as a Deacon while attending Austin Street. John and Sandra have had extraordinary lifelong friendships with members through Austin Street as well as neighborhood friendships after living at the same South Garland location since September of 1970. John was a consistent encourager to wife Sandra who held a weekly home Bible study group until recent months due to both of their health situations.

John and Sandra later placed membership at Highland Oaks church of Christ after the sale of the building at Austin Street. John remained a member. John broke his hip at age 90 after falling while leaving church, after taking the Lord's Supper, on May 18, 2026.

John's health declined steadily after his fall, exacerbated by heart failure and other related conditions. John entered hospice care, just under one week prior to his passing away at age 91. John passed peacefully on January 28th after EMS transported him to Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas just prior to the recent ice storm event.

John was proceeded in death by two adult children who passed after long illnesses. Son Marc died in 2001 prior to his 35th birthday, and daughter Melody Kirk died in 2015 at age 58. John also was proceeded in death by grandson, Tyler Amburgey, who died suddenly at age 29 in 2020.

John's faithfulness and commitment to his church and family remained steadfast in the storm of tremendous pain in the passing of Melody and Marc, as well as grandson Tyler.

John and Sandra's continued faithfulness, despite tremendous loss here on earth, remains a witness to the great salvation found in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Memorial Service:

A celebration of John's life will be held at Highland Oaks, church of Christ, 9400 Plano Road, Dallas, Texas, at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Visitation with family will be immediately following the service.  There will not be graveside service.

We look forward to seeing church family and friends, as well as any former fellow employees of John's at State Farm.

Memorial Donations:

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Arms of Hope or the Mission Fund at Buckingham Road church of Christ in Garland, in honor of John Amburgey
