Obituary

Carole Joan White was born to Jettie Brooks Miller and Robert Holman Miller, on June 23,1940 in Dallas Texas. She passed away at home, from pancreatic cancer, on September 18, 2020.

Joan's life was truly one of love and service to others.

She was spiritually awakened, kind, thoughtful, resilient, hopeful, devoted, intelligent, hardworking, compassionate, witty, forgiving and a wise soul.

Few were the years when she wasn't caring for someone else. She married, Nolan Horton, at a young age and had six children. They didn't have much money, but she made up for that in love and volunteering at their school, camping trips, drive-in movies, music and neighbors, learning to sew and finding creative ways to cook spam, chicken, pancakes, beans and potatoes.

She also taught herself shorthand and typing and obtained a job at an insurance agency. Although she didn't complete high school, her perseverance and problem- solving abilities were rewarded with promotions. From office clerk to vice-president of her own region, Joan accomplished what she set out to do.

In 1995, she married the true love of her life, Dewayne (De) White.

Theirs was a loving, supportive and devoted union. The love was there long before the wedding bands made it official and will continue through eternity.

De brought his collection of 20,000 books to the union and in

November of 2001, Joan opened her own online bookstore, "White Unicorn Books." De joined her soon after and helped with website management. They were proud members of the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA).

De and Joan enjoyed traveling and were able to experience such wonderful places as Helsinki Finland, St. Petersburg Russia, Paris France, Vancouver, Victoria British Columbia, Stockholm Sweden and Yosemite National Forest, California as well as the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff Arizona and lots of big skies, open roads and beautiful sunsets in Texas.

Joan and De were caregivers to her grandmother Effie Sandlin, his and her mothers, Juanita White and Jettie Miller, her father, Robert Miller, her sister, Mary Moore, and De's ex-wife. Gwendolyn White.

When De was diagnosed with cancer 9 years ago, she devoted her life to caring for his until his death in 2019.

Her children have always come first in her life. She has been their guiding light through all their joys and sorrows. The loss of her 3 rd child, Nolan Ray Horton Jr. from SIDS left a hole in her heart that can only now be closed, as she once again is able to hold her baby boy.

It is no surprise that there are many who will mourn the loss of this wonderful woman - family and their spouses, cousins, friends and spiritual classmates from the Michaels Foundation.

Her grandchildren and many great-grandchildren will miss her voice, guidance and tender touch.

Joan leaves behind her treasured children; Suzanne (John) Pirozzolo, Robert Horton, Michael Horton, Daren (Becki) Horton, Anna (Bill) McBride. She also leaves her sister, Delia (Art) MacLaren, nephew, Michael (Tammie) Sullivan and niece, Alethea Skews.

I don't think I can find the words to say how much I will miss her. I only know that there will come a day when she and I will laugh and sing and tell our sister stories again, but today there are only tears of sadness at the loss of such a dear person in my life.

Joan was 80 when she passed, and had lost many loved ones during her life. Whenever she felt that loss was too hard to abide, she'd read this quote and would feel more hopeful about a future that waits.

"Love of adventure, curiosity, and dread of monotony—these traits inherent in evolving human nature—were not put here just to aggravate and annoy you during your short sojourn on earth, but rather to suggest to you that death is only the beginning of an endless career of adventure, an everlasting life of anticipation, an eternal voyage of discovery.

True, these ambitious urges must frequently be restrained during your short life on earth, disappointment must be often experienced, but they are to be fully realized and gloriously gratified during the long ages to come."

Because of COVID-19, there will be a private graveside service on October 4, 2020 at St. Paul Cemetery in St. Paul Texas. Joan and Dewayne will be interred together.

Perhaps in later days, a larger gathering can be arranged to celebrate Joan's truly remarkable life.
