Harley Leroy Waggoner

July 5, 1935 - November 8, 2023

Harley Leroy Waggoner was born on July 5, 1935 in Hylton, Texas. He was the youngest of 4 children
from Willie Luther Waggoner and Grace McGinley Waggoner. Both Will and Grace were widowed, and
Harley was the youngest of 15 children from the overall family.

Harley married Emma Lou Hipp on June 11, 1955 in Blackwell, Texas, and they made their first home in
Sweetwater. Harley and Emma moved the family to Garland in 1963, where they raised their boys and
continued to live in the same neighborhood for the past 48 years.

Harley and Emma had 3 sons – Garry lives in North Richland Hills - Mike who passed in 1980 – and Robert with his wife Melodee live in Sachse. Harley and Emma were married for 68 years. Harley and Emma have 5 grandchildren, Jenny with her husband KJ, Jason with his wife Sonya, Jackson with his wife Becky, Josey, and Jenna and 2 great grandchildren, Maddox and Cameron. Harley was instrumental in the early Garland YMCA and in youth sports in Garland. He especially had a passion for track and field; Coach Waggoner was a strong positive influence for many young people over a 20-year span.

Harley retired from GrayBar Electric in 1999 after a long career in sales, where his strengths of loving to travel and loving to talk served him well, as he provided a comfortable life for his family. Harley and Emma loved to camp, starting with Harley camping with Garry and Mike at Camp Grady Spruce. Summer vacations usually involved pulling the pop-up behind the station wagon to New Mexico or Colorado, and later to Arkansas. Harley and Emma progressed from a pop-up to their pride and joy fifth-wheel. Camping was their retirement, and they loved travelling with their Hitchhiker camping club over the years.

Harley and Emma have been members of Axe Memorial United Methodist Church since the early 1960's, raising the boys there, supporting the youth and their Sunday School class, and continuing to today where they have many long-time friends.

Harley will be remembered as a loving father, grandad, and husband. Harley passed with dignity and grace as he was mentally very sharp all the way to the end, and he chose how he would pass. Standing around the bed as your husband, father, and grandad passes is never pleasant, however it's important to know that Robert made Harley laugh when he cracked a joke about Texas A&M when Harley motioned for Robert to come closer. That is a testament to Harley's strength, character, and courage, and his mental engagement all the way to his last breath.

Visitation for Harley will be held Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 5-7PM at Williams Funeral Directors. Services will be held the following Sunday, November 12, at 2:30 PM at Axe Memorial United Methodist Church, with a viewing at the church held at 2:00PM until service. The following Monday, Harley will be laid to rest in Blackwell Cemetery in Blackwell, TX at 1:00PM.
