Obituary

Eugene "Gene" Woods, age 93, of Lancaster, Texas, was born November 21, 1930, in Ace, Polk County Texas, and passed away August 28, 2024 in Dallas, Texas.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Minnie Coyle-Woods; his wife, Bobbie Jean Woods; his stepson and wife, Terry and Cynthia Gay; his son, Kenneth Lee Woods; and his son-in-law James Franklin Hansen (Sonny). He is survived by his friend and brother-in-law, Billy Newberry; his stepdaughter and son-in-law, Bill and Brenda Garrison; daughter-in-law, Lana Kay Woods; son and daughter-in-law, Melvin Gene and Rose Woods; and daughter Margaret Elaine Hansen. Gene was blessed with 12 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, as well as several great-great grandchildren.

If you spent any time sitting beside Gene, you would know of his love for his service in the 3rd Infantry of the United States Army. Gene was proud to have honored his commitment to service and country during the Korean War as a mechanic, and while it cannot be confirmed, his stories of piecing together Jeeps for various military officers will live on forever in the Woods' family lore. Gene Woods was man that could fix anything, a persistent and steady father, a grandfather that always had story of boyhood mischief from he and his brothers growing up in Shelby County and he was a friend you could call for help. A lifelong diesel mechanic for Yellow Freight, Gene valued an honest day's work and enjoyed spending his time away fishing. Gene stood well over 6 feet tall with a heart to help those around him and was often a place to come for safety with his towering stature. It's not often you see a man of Gene's size sitting down beside his great grandson singing, "Listen to the Mockingbird," while tapping his foot to the music, but that was our Papa. We will miss our storyteller but as a man of faith and believer in Christ, we know Gene will be waiting with a new set of stories when we are reunited in Heaven.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Williams Funeral in Garland, Texas from 9:30-10:30am.
