Dewayne J.
White
Mar 15, 1940 — Jun 21, 2019
Dallas
Dewayne (De) White was born March 15, 1940 in Dallas Texas, and passed away at home on June 21, 2019, free of pain and with his devoted wife, Joan, and stepson Robert, by his side.
De had a long and interesting career as an underwater acoustic specialist and senior scientist in the United States Navy. He also did government contract work. Not only was De responsible for creating an underwater acoustic system code that is still used today, his time in the Navy allowed for travel in such places as the Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Indian Ocean and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as well as adventures in ports along the way.
After retiring from the Navy, De became a partner in Joan's online bookstore, "White Unicorn Books", and was an active member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA.)
De spent several years in San Diego, California, but eventually moved back to Dallas bringing with him a collection of over 30,000 science fiction books. If asked, he would enthusiastically give you the author and storyline to just about any Sci-Fi book you could think of!
In 1995, Dewayne married his lifelong love and sweetheart, Carole Joan Horton. They had known each other from birth!
Together, they built of marriage based of love, trust and devotion.
De was also and avid computer game player – particularly those based on science fiction characters and events. We always felt a bit sorry for his opponents.
However, his most difficult battle was not waged in an imaginary country, but in real life. This time, his opponent was fierce. Nine years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. That would be followed a couple of years later by a diagnosis of stage 4 prostrate cancer. De never gave up his fight against cancer until a few months before his passing. He often said he didn't think about it much; he just did the treatments, followed his physicians' directives and let others do the worrying.
His positive outlook, lack of worry and exceptional care from his wife Joan, stepson Robert, stepdaughter Suzanne, and sister-in-law Delia, helped him live much longer than many of his doctors expected.
Preceding Dewayne in death were his mother, Juanita Jellison; his father, Ethol White and brothers Robert and Patrick White.
He is survived by stepchildren; Suzanne Pirozzolo (John), Robert Horton, Michael Horton, Daren Horton (Becki), Anna McBride (Bill) as well as his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Delia and Art MacLaren, niece Alethea Skews, and nephew, Michael Sullivan (Tammie.)
There are also numerous grandchildren and a multitude of great grandchildren that will miss him also.
His loving wife, Carole Joan White, passed away September 18, 2020.
The interment of Dewayne and Joan, will take place in a private graveside service on October 4, 2020 at St. Paul cemetery, St. Paul, Texas.
