Carol Lynne
Leary
Dec 24, 1942 — Oct 9, 2025
Carol was born on December 24, 1942 (Christmas Eve) in Berkeley, California, the second born daughter to Oleen Elison Haight and Mildred Elaine (Johnson) Haight. Her sister never forgave her for ruining her Christmas that year as their parents were at the hospital while Nancy was left with her Grandmother Haight. Interestingly enough, she was born during an earthquake. Her Mom described the event as her bed was moving back and forth across the floor. You might say, Carol arrived with a "bang". This was in 1945 at the end of World War Two.
After the War ended, she along with her parents and older sister, Nancy, moved to the small town of Eden, Idaho which was located in the southern part of the state 17 miles east of Twin Falls. Eden was a small town of approximately 350 people and everyone knew each other. Carol loved living there where she made many close friends that stayed in touch throughout her life. They would get together every three years or so and meet in various cities. Nancy loved her sister very much and Carol's friends became Nancy's friends as she would often join them in their reunions.
Carol was an excellent student with mostly straight A's throughout her education. She was very popular and was a cheerleader and a member of the marching Vikings drill team. She also had a bit of mischievousness in her. Her parents owned and operated a large grocery store. Directly behind the store, her dad and uncle had built a large warehouse to be used for storage. One fine sunny day, when she was about six or seven years old, one of her friends, who lived a few blocks from them, decided to make mudballs. They climbed up the ladder leading to the rooftop of that warehouse where they lined those mudballs up on the edge to dry. Once they were fully dry, they made the decision to throw them at the cars driving past. BIG MISTAKE! One hard mudball hit the windshield of a passing car and cracked it. The driver was furious and ran into the store shouting, if anyone knew who those girls belonged to. Her dad immediately knew who it was.
During her pre-teens and teen years, she along with her sister spent her summers in Los Angeles, California with her Mom's youngest sister and family. It was during those summers that she took private dance lessons from Nico Charise and Gene Nelson, well known professional Hollywood dancers. She was an excellent dancer and while attending BYU she was part of the marching/dancing Cougarettes. She even competed in the "Miss Burley" pageant in Burley, Idaho and her talent was dancing. She placed second.
After college, she went to Beauty School in Salt Lake City and became an exceptional hair dresser. In 1970, she was chosen as the Utah State Hairstylist of the year. She received a 5 foot trophy and all expenses paid trip to Hawaii. To help celebrate her victory, her husband Vic Anderson, along with her parents, sister and brother-in-law all decided to accompany her. As her brother-in-law worked for the airlines, he upgraded everyone to First Class. On a side note, both Carol and her sister were pregnant with their due dates just three days apart. While there, they were fortunate to watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon in their hotel room. It was a wonderful 10 day trip visiting all of the various islands.
She then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico when her husband, Vic Anderson, was transferred there with his work. They would later divorce and she ended up moving to Dallas, Texas until her recent death. When she first moved to Dallas, she started working in a high end beauty salon where she was the only American hairstylist among mostly German and French stylists. After establishing her own clientele, she left and opened her own salon in Lake Highlands Dallas. Shortly after her marriage to Jim Leary, she retired from hairstyling to be a full time wife and Mom to Michael.
Jim and Carol were married at the top of the Empire State Building where it was closed for a couple of hours so they could have their private wedding. It was a beautiful wedding venue with just family and a few close friends. She and Jim purchased a timeshare condo in Cabo San Lucas and visited every year. They also traveled to China, London and Paris. One year they spent a week on Sanibel Island, Florida where her son, Michael and sister, Nancy joined them. After Jim passed away, Carol continued to honor his memory by never removing her wedding band.
As you can see, Carol and her sister, Nancy, shared so many fun times together and talked on the phone nearly every day. They had a standing lunch and nail appointment together every three weeks. Usually, lunch would be Tex Mex. Every Sunday, her son, Michael, would go to her home and cook a nice dinner for them to enjoy together. Nancy is heartbroken at losing her only sibling and will miss her every day as they did so much together.
She was thrilled when her son Michael moved from Washington state to Dallas. Having him close by was a true blessing in her life. She loved him unconditionally.
Carol had health challenges throughout her life. When just a young girl, she had epilepsy seizures. She and her sister shared a bed growing up. Strangely, she could feel them coming on so Nancy learned how to help suppress them. She eventually outgrew the epilepsy. Years later, she had about a year where she had vertigo but never let it slow her down too much. She had to be driven to work but still continued cutting hair, mostly by feel. Three years ago her family almost lost her when Michael found her unresponsive on her living room floor. She was in a diabetic coma and also had a heart attack. She was on a ventilator for several days and spent about a month in the hospital and then another month in a rehab hospital. She was able to return home with a caregiver three days a week to help her in her personal care. She used a cane to keep her steady on her feet and had a bit of memory loss.
All in all, Carol enjoyed her life, surrounded by family and many close friends. Some of her happiest times were during those visits. She could be a bit stubborn at times, much like her Daddy, but everyone loved her anyway. Once she married Jim, (a New Yorker) she became a devoted New York Yankees fan! Her Dad, who was a huge LA Dodgers fan, hated the Yankees and was probably turning over in his grave with disappointment! Sports played a big part in her life. She loved, loved, loved Michael Jordan who played basketball for the Chicago Bulls. She had such a huge crush on him, and she had a large picture of him on her bedroom wall. Once she married Jim, Jordan's picture was relegated to the garage wall!
We will miss her her smile, her unwavering love of family and her ability to overcome tough times.
Carol was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although in her later years, she was not an active member, she loved her Savior and found peace with her knowledge of the Plan of Salvation.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oleen and Mildred Haight, her first husband, Irwin Wiser, her second husband, Vic Anderson, her brother-in-laws Robert Shaw, Will Moore and Perry Max and the love of her life Jim Leary. She is survived by her loving son, Michael Anderson, sister, Nancy Haight Max, niece, Kendal Kier, nephews Steve Shaw (Missy), David Shaw (Karyn) and their son, Ben, sister-in-law Pam Goldie-Morrison ( Duncan), stepson Neil Leary, step-grandchildren Quinn and Noah as well as Hunter and Katie Palmer ( Nancy's grandchildren).
May she rest in peace until we meet again.
