Barbara Margaret Ahrens passed away on March 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, steadiness, and unconditional love. Born on October 19, 1934, in Ansonia, Connecticut, to John Harry Horbal and Lottie Margaret Dojny, Barbara moved through life with a calm, joyful energy that made people feel instantly at ease.

Barbara graduated from Naugatuck High School at sixteen and later attended Post's Junior College of Commerce. She began her career in the insurance industry, but the true center of her life was always people, listening to them, encouraging them, and celebrating who they were.

In 1953, she married Paul Shaw, and together they raised four children while living in Oklahoma and across Texas before settling in Dallas. Barbara taught Sunday School at Cliff Temple Baptist Church, offering young children the same gentle presence she offered everyone she met.

In 1981, she married John ("Johnny") Ahrens, and together they raised a blended family of six children. Their home in Garland was full of music, laughter, and the steady rhythm of shared life. Barbara and Johnny worked side by side in their insurance agency and were long-time members of First Baptist Church Garland, where they were active in the music ministry, senior activities, and Bible study. Barbara especially loved hearing the church orchestra.

The heart of Barbara's life was her family. She loved holidays and gatherings, the happy noise of grandchildren around a puzzle or board game, and the simple joy of being together. She delighted in good stories, good laughter, and the small, meaningful moments that brought the family together.

Barbara was a wonderful listener, the kind who made people feel safe, heard, and never judged. She offered love and encouragement without advice or expectation. She was a little mischievous, drawn to odd and quirky people, and she was a remarkable keeper of secrets. Her humor was gentle, her presence grounding, and her support unwavering. Barbara was known for her unconditional love, her ability to celebrate others, and the way she made each person feel valued exactly as they were.

She was always smiling, always laughing, always creating space for others to shine. The feeling she leaves behind is gratitude, for her steadiness, her joy, and the quiet, powerful way she loved.

Barbara is survived by her sister-in-law Denise Horbal; children Melodie Shaw Kenney (Mike), Robert Shaw (Elena), Randy Shaw (Jennifer), Penny Shaw Crosson (Troy), and Debra Ahrens Zimmer (Eric); grandchildren Garrett Smulcer (Tesa), Kevin Kenney, Carolyn Kenney (Josh), Jonathan Kenney, Stephen Glakeler, Brooke Stavely, Tyler Crosson (Laura), Shannon Shaw, Kendall Crosson Brantley (Taylor), Blake Stavely, James Shaw (Peyton), Erik Kaspruk (Katie), Austin Shaw (Jesica), and Lauren Ahrens; and great-grandchildren Addison Smulcer, Edith Anne Kenney, Madeline King, Joseph Brantley, Olivia Brantley, Beckett Shaw, and Charlotte Shaw.
